World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Research on Oral Health in Deprived Communities

The University of Salford is working with the University of Liverpool's World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Research in Oral Health in Deprived Communities.

The University of Liverpool was re-designated as a WHO Collaborating Centre in 2009 under the direction of Professor Cynthia Pine.

By definition a WHO Collaborating Centre is an institution designated by the Director-General to form part of an international collaborative network carrying out activities in support of the organizations programme at all levels (WHO, 2010)

Work Plan

  • To develop the evidence base and provide guidance on and evaluation of effective oral health education and oral health promotion interventions.
  • To contribute to Community Health Practice by evaluating mechanisms to re-orientate dental health services from a disease-reparative paradigm to a health-promoting paradigm
  • To deliver training in dental public health, community health practice and research
  • To promote new approaches to integrating the work of those working with children and young people in health, education and social care to enhance health and reduce inequalities

Research

The Collaboration Centre has two delivery sites: in the School of Dental Sciences in the University of Liverpool, and within the College of Health and Social Care at the University of Salford who partner with NHS Salford to deliver the aims of the centre and Salford's Oral Health Strategy.

The centre is also conducting research internationally in Lebanon, Nigeria and China.
